9 Tips to Make a Family Vacation Less Stressful

Vacations are a time to relax and let loose. This should not be a stressful time, but I always find myself stressing that I will forget something. We have only gone on a few vacations, but here are 9 tips to make a family vacation less stressful.

Hire a Professional Cleaner

I cannot emphasize how nice it is to come home to a clean house when you are tired from traveling and have to unpack.

Hire a Professional Organizer

I may be biased, since I am a professional organizer, but I have organized while clients are away to have them tell me how exciting it was to walk into an organized home.

Don’t Overpack

I know I am always guilty of this with my boys. There are plenty of stores where you are going where you can buy what you need. Also, no one except you and your family will know if you wear the same outfit more than once – I won’t tell!

Rent a Vehicle

We usually take my SUV, but having a rental is one less thing to worry about. They are responsible for the maintenance and repairs. This also comes in handy if you need a bigger vehicle to house your luggage.

I look for Groupons or other deals/discounts for attractions. My husband is a veteran, so I look for military discounts, too. Many offer student discounts and senior discounts as well.  Many places offer coupon books in rest areas or welcome centers. Also, sign up for the tourist website newsletter or social media for more deals.

I know this is easier to say than do, but keep a track of expenditures. I usually keep an envelope with receipts, so I can tally up the totals.

Make a List

I know I am a nerd when it comes to planning, but I usually make a list of attractions we want to see. I try to make a spreadsheet calendar with options for each day. There is no need packing in too much to where the kids aren’t having fun.

Visit Parks

Research and find a local park for the kids to let out some energy.

Plan a Recovery Day

Plan a recovery day when you get home to unpack and get ready for the return to work/school.

I hope these tips helped you or made you think of some others.  We would love to hear your thoughts. Most importantly, though, go have fun on vacation!
