Louisville Mom Collective is all about bringing mothers together in the Louisville community. As we get closer to Mother’s Day, I thought it would be good to talk about another organization who is all about mamas! This month’s Heart of LMC is focused on Mama to Mama.
Mama to Mama is a nonprofit located in Louisville Kentucky. Their story, vision, and mission are sure to melt your heart…come take a peek!
“Mama to Mama was founded in 2012 by Shannon Stone Porter, Emily Whitsett-Pickett, Anne Darku and Heather Molina. As mothers, they had observed that Louisville had thriving support opportunities for parents who were largely white and economically privileged. These opportunities, such as prenatal education, doulas, play groups and classes supported the transition to parenting and beyond. They believed that this type of support should be available to all parents regardless of race, gender, orientation or economic privilege. Mama to Mama was born to meet this need in the community.”
Since it was founded, it has helped countless parents and families through all avenues of parenthood. The family at Mama to Mama has held true to its beliefs and vision about what support should look like for all parents. They continue to work side by side with community partners to reach more and more families.
Mama to Mama provides programming and support resources to families around their needs for pregnancy, birth, infant care and early parenting. These programming and resources include, but are not limited to:
Community Supported Doula Services
These services are provided at little to no cost to expecting parents in the community. Mama to Mama describes their program as.
Prenatal Classes
Prenatal Classes are held weekly and each new session is kicked off with a Community Baby Shower. Topics rotate weekly, so expecting parents can learn all about healthy pregnancies, birthing plans, feeding babies, and medical choices. This is also a great time for expecting parents to bond with other families and create a network of support.
Family Playgroups
Currently there are several playgroups that are offered through Mama to Mama. Due to Covid-19, these are being held virtually and have been adapted to fit that need. These groups are fun, interactive, and are a wonderful way to bond with your child.
The work that Mama to Mama does is so important to build and strengthen the community, as lives change and families grow!
