A Little Back-to-School Prep Goes a Long Way

I know, I know. It’s only the middle of summer, and no one wants to hear the words “back-to-school” while there’s still sunshine, pool days, and baseball and softball filling up the calendar.

But hear me out.

Every year, I tell myself I’ll wait until August to think about school. Then suddenly the calendar flips, the stores are packed, supply lists seem to appear overnight, and I’m trying to squeeze shopping, sports, doctor’s appointments and last-minute summer fun into just a few short weeks. It’s stressful, and honestly, it takes some of the excitement out of the new school year.

This year, I’m trying something different.

back-to-school

Instead of waiting until everything becomes urgent, I’m doing a little bit at a time.

I’ve started keeping an eye out for school supplies when I’m already at the store. If I see notebooks or crayons on sale, I’ll toss them in the cart. Spreading out the purchases feels much easier on the budget than buying everything in one trip.

I’m also taking inventory of what we already have. Before buying new backpacks, lunch boxes, or water bottles, it’s worth checking to see what’s still in good shape from last year. Sometimes all something needs is a quick wash to be ready for another school year.

Clothes are another area I’m starting to think about. Kids seem to grow overnight during the summer, so I’ll have everyone try on last year’s jeans, shoes and jackets before we start shopping. It helps us buy only what they actually need.

I’m even making a list of the little things that tend to sneak up on me—scheduling haircuts, checking if anyone needs a physical for sports, making dentist appointments and updating the family calendar with school events once they’re released.

The best part? Planning ahead doesn’t mean rushing summer. We’re still soaking up every game, cookout and lazy afternoon we can. It just means future me won’t be scrambling when August arrives.

A little preparation now can make the transition back to school feel much calmer. And when that first day rolls around, I’d much rather be taking pictures on the front porch than frantically searching for a missing folder or wondering where everyone’s shoes disappeared to.

Summer isn’t over, but a little planning today can make next month a whole lot easier.
